Hi. I’m Joe. Welcome to my world.
One of my favorite peoiple in the world is magician Dani DaOrtiz. When you get a chance hop over to YouTube and watch him. Your head will explode. And every time he does something beyond belief — like when he makes the card you are thinking of appear before you even tell him what it is — wverybody all around will sputter incomprehensible sounds of wonder and astonishment, “WHAH?” and “BILBLBILBL” and GRGBLGLBEG”
Dani will stand in the middle of it all and smile and say:
“Welcome to my world.”
This is my world. For almost 40 years — can it really be that long? — I have written about sports and stuff. This crazy journey has taken me all over the world, to six continents, to just about every arena and stadium of any size in America (and a lot of the small ones too), to 10 Olympics, to more Super Bowls and World Series and Masters and Final Fours and championship games than I honestly can remember. How did that happen? How would I ever be able to explain this life to the 10-year-old version of myself?
In many ways, that’s what JoeBlogs is — me writing to that 10-year-old kid who would would rip open Sports illustrated and The Sporting News and the daily paper and just let the words crash over him.
Please look around. There’s a section in here about the eight books I’ve written. I’m currently working on my ninth … and simultaneously my tenth. My wife Margo thinks I should slow down.
There’s a section in here about The PosCast, the sports and nonsense podcast I’ve been doing with my pal Mike Schur since 1973. Here’s a photo of me and Mike in front of the left field wall at Wrigley Field. I’m not entirely sure who the guy in the green shirt is, though.
Most of all, there’s JoeBlogs, my newsletter and blog and daily heartrbeat. After getting thrown around in the media tidal wave of the last 25 years — in just that time I’ve written for The Kansas City Star, Sports Illustrated, Sports on Earth, NBC Sports, MLB.com, The Athletic, Esquire and a bunch of places I’m forgetting now — I started JoeBlogs, where I write a lot of baseball, but also football, some tennis, a little golf, basketball, music, travel, movies, Olympics, Buck O’Neil memories, infomercials, family, complaints about people backing into parking spots, science, hockey, chess, magic, fountain pens, my loathing of Billy Joel, my love of Bruce Springsteen* soccer, pretty much anything and everything except politics. There are no politics.
*Does it actually make sense to love Bruce and loathe Billy Joel? I’ve long ago stopped worrying about it.
JoeBlogs has two tiers. There’s the free tier, which has plenty of stuff — I write A LOT. And then there’s the paid tier, where you get everything I write and also get to be part of the very cool JoeBlogs community, which has somehow managed to stay 96% kind and supportive even in these times. Have a look around, enjoy yourself, and if you decide you want to subscribe, I’d obviously love that. I do have two daughters in college.
