Brilliance from a Brilliant Reader

I love every word of this comment from Brilliant Reader Alejo:

Pete Rose played winter baseball for the Caracas’ Leones one season in the sixties. He was already obsessively competitive and is remembered as both a mensch and a defensive liability at second base. No one ever questioned his guts though.

He would get out of the park, have a beer and a steak and scarper to the horse races, a behaviour that immediately led Venezuelans to consider Rose a capital fellow.

Some people are so great they should be put apart from themselves, so they don’t spoil everything (see Maradona, Diego).

I swear I thought “scarper” was a typo, intended to be “scamper.” No: “scarper” = “to depart in haste.” Learn something every day.

Alejo must either be British or have learned English from someone who is. That would explain the awesome use of “behaviour,” “scarper,” and “capital fellow.” I loved this comment.

  3. This could easily be a “Favorite Athlete” essay. And a good one at that.

Well, I officially hate Alejo, and here is why: He is obviously a Venezuelan as myself (only a Venezuelan about Pete’s time in the Caribbean), he is a Leones fan (again as myself), just got called a Brilliant Reader by Joe, and can write better than I ever will.
