My 269 Happiest Songs
Posted: March 17th, 2010 | Filed under: Pop Culture | 198 Comments »
Have you ever started a project and wondered: “Um, why did I start that?”
OK, have you done that about five times in a week? I mean, first I started that “Do a different player every day” spring training project (and yes, they will be coming in rapid fire soon) and then, right in the middle, I decided to chase down the happiest songs for no apparent reason.
Well, here’s my list. And I want to make that clear: It is MY list.*
Update: It’s now 282 songs. And counting. Might get to 300. But no higher.
I took numerous suggestions. I listened to quite a few new songs … some are on here. But, these are the songs that, one way or another, have brought real joy into MY life. Some brought joy to me as a kid. Some brought joy to me in high school. Some brought joy to me in college, and in my younger days as a sportswriter, and some brought joy to me because they made my wife happy. Some, many of these songs, have made me happy because my daughters love them. I have not loved many songs more than Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” because I have a five and eight year old who light up every time they hear it. Same with “Hoedown Throwdown.”
A few of rules:
1. No act is allowed on the list more than once. So, there is only one Beatles song on here, only one Springsteen song on here, only one Elvis song on here. I have no doubt that Beatles fans may not have picked “Here Comes the Sun” and Springsteen fans may not have picked Rosalita and Elvis fans definitely would not have picked His Latest Flame … fill in your own there.
2. Don’t Worry, Be Happy is not on here despite the many requests. I despise that song … but that’s not why I left it off. There are other songs here I don’t like. I left it off because, deep down, I don’t think it’s a happy song. Landlord says your rent is late — he’s suing you. Guy’s got no cash, no gal … what the hell is he supposed to be so happy about? He’s not happy. He’s kidding himself. Song isn’t on here.
3. Some of these songs are not “happy.” But hearing them makes me happy.
4. I would love to go through each of these songs and tell you why they make me happy … but who am I kidding? I’ll never get to it. But if you would like to vote in the comments — pick a few of these songs that you love — I’ll put together a poll on the side, we can vote and try to come up with the happiest album ever. And I’ll comment on those songs. Remember, only the 269 songs here are eligible. I suspect you will despite many of these songs, maybe even most. But I would hope everyone would be able to find at least a few that make you smile.
Enjoy.

I wish I had been thinking of this song earlier. “Float On” by Modest Mouse.
No “Mr. Blue Sky?” You must be a very sad person despite your 269 songs.
Joe, you did it wrong!
I’ll admit it: I have “You Belong With Me” on my iPod. And when that song comes on shuffle, it puts a pep in my step.
There. I said it.
Oh, and unfortunately I can’t blame liking Taylor Swift(yes, not just the one song) on having kids.
“Robert Keen! Robert Keen!”
Personally need a Genesis song on here — Abacab always does the trick for me.
For the Killers, Spaceman over All these things I’ve done?
I’ve got soul but….
Wow! I was quite surprised to see Blow Monkeys on here. Great song!
And you should listen to more Patsy Cline – there’s happier choices than “Crazy.”
Good list, but I don’t think they are all “happy” songs. The Smiths? I don’t think so. Time after time? I liked it when it came out, but not a happy song.
By the way, you have 2 shins songs, Australia and We Will Become Silhouettes.
Thanks for doing this. I was checking out a lot of songs yesterday for ones I didn’t know.
The Shins is on here twice.
Other than that, I love the list. I’d prefer to see All These Things that I’ve Done on here over Spaceman as well.
You’ve got two of my top 3 (U Can’t Touch This and Africa) but… no Stayin’ Alive??
Nice list… I don’t really see 1979 or Smells Like Teen Spirit as happy songs. Especially Smells Like Teen Spirit.
We need some oldies too
Del Shannon- Runaway
Four Seasons- Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.
Also: Are you going to do the requisite “sad songs” list? If so, might I suggest starting with “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens….
Good list–many of those songs have made me happy, as well. If you want happiness from Roxy Music, however, I recommend trying out “Prairie Rose,” their surprisingly giddy ode to the Lone Star State.
What? No “Happy Together” by The Turtles? No “Clint Eastwood” by the Gorillaz?
September, by Earth Wind and Fire. A must.
@Andrew(#16)
I’ll submit Pearl Jam – Black. Definitely a requisite follow-up to this post.
Er, #15. I’ll stop commenting now.
I did a search for Modest Mouse, and was glad to see a song was listed. But “Gravity Rides Everything” over “Float On” or “Dashboard”?
That was a shocker.
I agree with 21 – Float On is entirely intended to make you happy. Plus, 1979 is, like, one of the saddest songs I ever did listen to.
I was excited to see The Virgins on here, though.
I recommended 14 songs in the other thread, and three were listed above. Two were obvious — Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and Rusted Root’s “Send Me On My Way” — and recommended more than once.
But I was pleased to see They Might Be Giants’s “Birdhouse In Your Soul” on Joe’s list.
Finally, I’m not sure why each artist/band was limited to one song. Perhaps it was a time saver, as once one song is picked by, for example, Led Zeppelin, one could forget about all other songs by LZ.
But, ultimately … thank you, Joe and posters, for suggesting all these songs!
apparently most of the commenters did not read your rules.
and it may make you happy, but pearl jam’s “just breathe” makes me angry; nothing to do with the lyrics or music, it’s just not a pearl jam song the way I like to think of pearl jam.
“Have you ever started a project and wondered: ‘Um, why did I start that?’ ”
Are you asking your audience, or Dayton Moore?
The songs here that make me happiest: 1234, Africa (yes!), Everyday, Friday I’m In Love, Here Comes the Sun, I Will Follow You Into the Dark (me and the wifey’s wedding song), I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), Life in a Northern Town, MMMBop (perfect pop tune), Rhapsody in Blue, Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), Skinny Legs, Summertime, Wake Up. There were a lot of songs on the list that I love, but I don’t know if they make me happy.
Sorry – I hate your list. Not because all the songs are happy, not because all the songs are not happy, not because some were left off, or some were included. But just because every person interprets every song differently – it is all SO subjective. If I heard “Let Go” on the day my mother died, it would be the saddest song on this list. “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen and “Wild Thing” by the Troggs are two of the happiest songs on Earth, but it has been proven that that chord progression (those two songs have the same chords) is pleasing to a human beings ears – and will generally make them feel happy (like “Twist and Shout” and “La Bamba”). “No Woman No Cry” always makes me feel melancholy, while “Three Little Birds” makes me happy as hell. Sorry Joe, can’t get behind this one.
“But just because every person interprets every song differently – it is all SO subjective. ”
Yes, that is why this is *Joe’s* list of happiest songs. He’s not maintaining that it is *The* list of happiest songs for everyone. That would be ludicrous.
But I might be misinterpreting what you can’t get behind on this one.
My favourite songs on here:
Buddy Holly, Weezer
Chicago, Sufjan Stevens
Crazy, Gnarls Barkley
The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage, Panic! At The Disco
Not many people have heard of Sufjan Stevens (phonetically it’s [Souf-hey-an], not [Suff-jan]) but Illinoise has to be one of my favourite albums ever
“The Lengths” by The Black Keys always gives me joy–must be the slide guitar. Also, “Your Touch”–Dan Auerbach’s singing on that one is delightfully raw and sexed-up.
Dry the Rain! Dry the Rain! None of those other songs matter! It is Dry the Rain or nothing!
Fun list.
I could’ve done with some more punk rock.
The Ramones need to be on there. “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”? “Blitzkrieg Bop”? Or a million others?
I’m also partial to Social Distortion’s “Story of My Life”. Not exactly a happy song, but it makes me happy!
But the biggest omission is “Here Comes Your Man” by the Pixies.
I defy you to listen to that song and not be happier afterward.
Still, fun list.
More than a Feeling is objectively the happiest song written in the 1970s. Fact. Any list without it is not a legitimate list.
To #25: How exactly is it not a “Pearl Jam” Song? It’s on a PJ record right? I’m a huge fan of theirs and have been for a long while and its a hell of a song that always puts me in a great mood, I’d also recommend “Guaranteed” by Eddie on the Into the Wild Soundtrack, absolute gem of a song.
Also let me add one of my fav get happy songs: “Get Myself Arrested” by Gomez.
But really, a Happy Song list without Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom” feels empty. Soundgarden’s version kills me still.
>>>If I Can’t Change Your Mind, Sugar
A stupendous pick.
I guess the distinction between a “happy” song and song-that-makes-me-happy isn’t intuitive, but (especially after having read your list) I know exactly what you mean. Lots of nods reading this list. 1979 seems like a good example, though I’m sure I’m affected by the video.
Modern Love by David Bowie, please!
Wonderful list which has given me a lot of songs to check out. Thanks!
The only glaring omission for me is Devil Went Down to Georgia which I think makes a lot of people happy. Plus it was my favorite song when I was 7, and is now my son’s favorite song at 7.
Well, and I’d need some Weird Al. Probably Albuquerque, because it’s my favorite sing along song, but there are a ton of happy choices.
There’s no Kinks song so I’d suggest “Better Things” although some would suggest “Sunny Afternoon” or “Come Dancing.” “Better Things” just seems so optimistic. Always lifts me up. For the Ramones I’d suggest “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up”. It reminds me how much fun it can be being immature. For a Turtles song “Happy Together” is fine but I prefer “She’d Rather Be With Me.” There’s a certain joy about it. Also, for XTC I prefer “Life Begins At The Hop.” Makes me want to jump around.
there must be an age related bias in there somewhere. I knew only about ten percent of the entries and agreed with less than half of Joe’s selections for the artist/song pairings I did know.
but then, I am old enough to be Joe’s father.
As someone who definitely would have picked “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame,” I thank you. (The Smiths used to cover it live, which is how I came to love it.)
Actually, I’m a much bigger fan of Gravity Rides Everything than Float On or Dashboard; but the song is entirely about dying.
Most MM songs aren’t happy, but Trucker’s Atlas is all about doing meth; it and Spitting Venom always put me in a good mood.
I remembered you were a David Wilcox fan, glad to see him on here with East Ashville Hardware. Overall, a lot of variety and a lot of interesting choices, Joe. I’ll forgive you for the Taylor Swift because you have such a good reason for that one.
A happy song list with no Beach Boys? They have a few that bring a smile.
Two additions, both by the same band (you try choosing between them). “ABC” and “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5 are like the sun emerging from behind the clouds and slapping you in the face with light.
Awesome list… I’m looking forward to digging in and finding a few of the songs that I’ve never heard before…
Going through it reminded me of some of the songs that have meant a lot to me as I’ve gone through life, particularly artists/bands of whom I have their entire catalog… And even if I didn’t personally agree with your choice, I loved seeing some of my favorites and it made me think which song I’d take out of their catalog…
As for Miley and Taylor–my girls are eight and five, too, and we have ALL of the Disney/Nickolodeon-created pop stars… And I love every song that they love… Luckily, we have mixed in a few of my favorites on their playlist (BNL, O.A.R., many tunes from Rock Band and Guitar Hero), so every time we get in the car it’s a great experience… It’s funny because I’ve had people tell me that they can’t stand “that stuff” and ask how I can listen to it (and LIKE it!)… I will tell anyone–if it makes my girls happy, it makes me happy…
And I, for one, would love to hear the reasons behind some of the selections, at least some of the less obvious tunes… Of course, only after I read the rest of my major league bios… LOL
No Harry Nilsson? I can’t listen to anything else in my house with the 5 year old ejecting the disk and put Harry Nilsson in.
I’m glad Jackie Wilson made this list, an excellent choice. I was going to suggest “She’s a Rainbow” by the Rolling Stones.
Just a list to remind you that you’re still alive
I think our host is fooling himself – that list is schitzo. I’m particularly curious about the notion that there are songs that he doesn’t like on the list.
Really? You get to pick one song from the catalog of each artist you consider, and the one that makes you happiest is one you don’t like?
That’s very odd.
Likewise, looking at the list I no longer trust the rationalization for leaving Bobby McFerrin off the list. There are other good reasons to leave it off (“serious overplay when it came out,” for example).
That said, there are a few brilliant calls on here: Linus & Lucy. Secret Agent Man (I prefer the Bruce Willis cover). The James Bond theme by the John Barry Orchestra ought to be under consideration, as well as Giacchino’s The Incredits.
I’d be surprised if the Batman TV theme doesn’t belong on the list.
Great list, however I would add one more: Do You Realize?? – The Flaming Lips
blister in the sun best and happiest song ever. hope it at least gets voted on.
I would consider the following Clash songs to be happier than London Calling:
Janie Jones
Remote Control
I’m So Bored With the USA
White Riot
Hate & War
What’s My Name
Deny
London’s Burning
Career Opportunities
Cheat
Protex Blue
Police & Thieves
48 Hours
Garageland
Car Jamming
Should I Stay Or Should I Go?
Rock the Casbah
Red Angel Dragnet
Overpowered By Funk
Atom Tan
Sean Flynn
Ghetto Defendant
Inoculated City
Tommy Gun
Julie’s In The Drug Squad
Last Gang In Town
Drug-Stabbing Time
Stay Free
Cheapskates
All The Young Punks (New Boots and Contracts)
Jimmy Jazz
Hateful
Rudie Can’t Fail
Spanish Bombs
The Right Profile
Clampdown
Wrong ‘Em Boyo
Death or Glory
Koka Kola
The Card Cheat
Lover’s Rock
Four Horsemen
I’m Not Down
Revolution Rock
Train in Vain (Stand by Me)
The Equalizer
The Magnificent Seven
Washington Bullets
Police On My Back
Lose This Skin
Charlie Don’t Surf
Junkie Slip
Midnight Log
The Call Up
Kingston Advice
The Street Parade
Version City
Ivan Meets GI Joe
The Leader
Something About England
The Crooked Beat
Somebody Got Murdered
One More Time
Lightning Strikes
Up In Heaven (Not Only Here)
Corner Soul
That’s a partial list. Yeah, I don’t think London Calling was a great choice.
Joe, it’s a great list and includes an impressive variety, but it seems like you may be the sort of guy who listens to the music and not the words so much. And the vast majority of them are very good examples of happy songs.
If you must choose an MJ song, how about “Man in the Mirror”? Better to avoid sexual meanings when dealing with an alleged child molester. There is nothing happy about that.
“Go Your Own Way” is about breaking up! You can call it another lonely day hardly seems happy and is repeated a few times.
“Going to California” is about change, but going to CA with an aching in his heart to seek a woman who’s never been born is something less than happy.
“Nothing Compares 2 U” is very much a song of loss and longing, if not obsessively feeling loss and longing.
“Take Five” is in a minor (sad) key* (although the turnaround is not, the vast majority of the song is still sad).
*which brings up a tangent about how I generally don’t care for sad songs in major keys. It’s why I don’t enjoy more country songs than I do.
I would have to include Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum. That song, despite the cookie format and poor recording, just makes me smile!

This post was mentioned on Twitter by JPosnanski: My 269 Happiest Songs (And you vote on them!). One warning … Don’t Worry, Be Happy ain’t on the list. http://bit.ly/aP7E84...
None of my suggestions made it, but still a fine list that includes some of what I thought were favorites of nobody else but me ((Keep Feeling) Fascination, Under the Milky Way, others).
Life in a Northern Town is by Dream Academy.
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” is not a real happy song. A great song, yes, but have you listened to the words? He’s breaking up with a woman in the cruelest way possible. “You just wasted my precious time.”
“Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Rainy Day Women,” “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” (the long rambling one where he and Captain A-Rab discover America), “The Mighty Quinn,” or “I Want You” would all be happier picks. “Desolation Row” might be a poor choice, though.
Is it just me or does “Come on Eileen” make you think of Irish bukkake, too?
Hey this is one heck of a list!!!
I dont know why each band/performer is limited to one “happy song” Clearly, some acts are happier than others. Paul McCartney — the king of the happy song — should have got a solo entry.
Also , I find the entries for the Bee Gees , Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison , and Led Zep
to be curious picks.
I also did not see Meatloaf on the list. On a pure pop sugar coated happiness critieria , the Bat Out of Hell album has at least one happy track on there for everyone.
Lady Marmalade — the original Patti Label version — is a pure bliss number.
Fleetwood Mac had to have a happy song somewhere?? Stevie Winwood?
And I am grateful to the internet and youtube for reuniting me with an act that made some real happy music videos — the Beasties.
Nevertheless, its an inspiring list. I’d like to place my vote for Heart of Glass.
some more songs for consideration:
In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry
No Me Hables – Juan Pardo
Funky Cold Medina – Tone Loc
Not looking to make your project longer, but I also wanted to change the entries for three groups:
David Gray should be The One I Love
Modest Mouse should be Float On
Steve Wonder should be Sunshine of My Life (this is not negotiable)
I will vote for 1234 by Feist, though. My wife still does the iPod commercial dance when she hears that song, which is always good for a laugh.
Poz, I don’t like how this has turned out thus far. Perhaps, wittle the 269 to an even 100? I love you, Joe!
No Centerfield? From a baseball guy?
Seriously, great list.
I really enjoyed reading those 300 comments with everyone posting their favorite happy songs.
I’d like to add:
Humpty Dance — Digital Underground
Me Myself and I — De La Soul
Bad Leroy Brown / Dont Mess Around With Jim — Jim Croce

Interesting list.
From many of the picks (One Man Guy, London Calling etc.) it’s evident that Joe believes it’s not always the bouncy, catchy tunes that make us happy. And I concur. For example, McCartney’s Silly Love Songs makes me want to step in front of a bus, while Cohen’s I’m Your Man always makes me smile.
“Have a Little Faith in Me” is one of the best songs ever. Lots of good music here.
Wow, really solid list. I found myself nodding more than I expected to. Particular thanks for including “Minnie the Moocher”. The Royals used to play that song once at every home game, usually between innings, but I think they would do it on pitching changes at times too. No matter the score, or the opponent, or the weather, or the number of people in the stands, nothing, I mean NOTHING, would get the crowd fired up more than that song.
The Royals being the Royals, they stopped playing “Minnie the Moocher” quite some time ago. Right around the time the franchise went to hell, it seems. Maybe that’s their problem. Call it Cab Calloway’s Curse.
Hmmm…I must say I am pleased to see many of my favorites on here, Joe. But Minnie the Moocher? I love Cab Calloway but really, I never thought of this as a happy song. Have you ever really read or listened to all the lyrics? If all you know is ” Heidi Heidi Ho’ you’re not getting the point. Consider: “She had a guy his name was Smokey, she love him though he was cokey. He took her down to China town and taught her how to kick the bong around. She had a dream about the King of Sweden, he gave her all the things she’d be needin’” Feel good song? This is a drug song! And if you doubt it, don’t forget that this is the same guy who recorded “The Reefer Man” in an era when most people didn’t even know what reefer was. The guy was, in a strage way, 30 years ahead of his time…
Not one Grateful Dead song!?
Twelve Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser – the version where everyone forgets what song they are singing, and ends up merging into Africa in the end.
I’ll add to it:
Party Machine Hoodoo Gurus
Daniel Lee Sarah Borges
“The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage”
This has got to be the worst song title in the history of song titles.
Holy crap, will some of you people leave Joe the hell alone? How many times does he have to say they’re not all ‘happy’ songs, just songs that make *him* happy? Here’s a guy on his own site saying what his criteria are — and he’s being told he’s wrong? Shaddup.
Dry the Rain
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic
Fell in Love with a Girl
Fight the Power
Here Comes Your Man
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Kids in America
Let’s Get It On
Mayor of Simpleton
Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)
How about “I Got Loaded” by Los Lobos? It’s as happy a song as I know (it’s also the song that plays during the sprinkler rainout scene in Bull Durham where the guys are, in fact, happy).
Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco. Happiest song of the 2000s.
Great, great, great list. Loved it.
Just about my only addition would be Baby It’s Cold Outside, ideally as performed by Bing Crosby and Doris Day.
I would like to nominate “Sunshine Daydream” from the Grateful Dead and “I am a Child” from Neil Young. They never let me down.
Oh, and “Bubble Toes” Jack Johnson.
Any list like this is personal and bound to be subjective so whatever makes you happy, good or you. I’m not going to quibble with your personal list. Though I do seriously question how “I Will Follow You into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie can make anyone happy. I love the song, but I like it in the “turn the lights off and plot out my suicide” kind of way. Still, your list. Mine would’ve had a lot more punk and indie rock on it, but that’s what makes me happy. Everyone’s list will be different.
I would like to say a quick RIP for Alex Chilton of Big Star. I had plans to see him at SXSW this weekend, but he died of a heart attack yesterday. Speaking of bands that make me happy, Big Star was high on that list. Great band that was tragically overlooked by the record buying public.
Since Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 get separate entries, you should feel free to have a Lennon song and a McCartney song from The Beatles in addition to “Here Comes the Sun,” by George Harrison.
BTW — the best HCTS version ever is a duet from Saturday Night Live in which Harrison sang the lead and Paul Simon provided the harmony. Magic!
I promised myself I wouldn’t ask the “Why does this make you happy” question. But your Bob Dylan song is “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” I could understand “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesone When You Go,” my choice from his songs would be “Farewell, Angelina,” and I suspect that 100 people could pick 100 different songs, but this one?
It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don’t matter, anyhow
An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don’t know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I’ll be gone
You’re the reason I’m trav’lin’ on
Don’t think twice, it’s all right
It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An’ it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
I’m on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin’ anyway
So don’t think twice, it’s all right
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
I can’t hear you anymore
I’m a-thinkin’ and a-wond’rin’ all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don’t think twice, it’s all right
I’m walkin’ down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right
Great list. Here are a few more that can put a smile on anyone’s face.
Len- Steal My Sunshine
The Rascals- A Beautiful Morning
The Lovin’ Spoonful- Do You Believe In Magic
The New Pornographers Use It
Jackie Deshannon- Put A Little Love In Your Heart
dogs barking Jingle Bells (not sure what the name of the band is)
I don’t understand how there isn’t a single Bon Jovi song on here. I know it’s YOUR list Joe, but I still don’t get it. How does “Livin on a Prayer” not put a smile on your face? Ahh, I am so angry that not even an acoustic version of “Bad Medicine” could settle me down right now.
I know you already have an Eagles song on the list, but I feel that you could have had “Desperado” and “Witchy Woman” as one entry for the Eagles. Forever linked in my mind, these two songs always put a smile on my face.
“In Da Club, 50 Cent”
What?!? Hey, to each his own.
This wasn’t to better relate to your black/Kevin Federline-esque audience, was it?
No, “Dump Love” by the Turd Burgulars?
Still nice list.
What, neither “Israelites” (Desmond Dekker & the Aces) nor “In the Summertime” (Mungo Jerry)? Paging the Oversight Committee! These old-timers should be voted in.
Weaver @32: solid choice of a Social D song, but may I’d like to also throw “Don’t Take Me For Granted” in there for consideration.
And I second mike @75′s motion that everyone who’s saying Joe “did it wrong” please zip it, and go make *your* list on *your* blog.
Two points. I know it is your list but I was really looking for a list that was pushing the envelope, outside the box thinking.
Wow. RIP Alex Chilton in your own Neon Rainbow
I don’t see any Ozzy. No Iron Maiden. No Judas Priest. No Dio. No Crue. No G’nR. No Cinderella. No Ratt. No Scorpions. No Whitesnake. This list is like totally a joke, man.
#81 – Alex Chilton? Darn. I’m gonna go put on “The Letter” by the Box Tops and groove out to the then-teenaged Alex Chilton on his first #1 record. (As I recall, the shortest #1 single ever recorded.)
PS – there were a lot of songs I thought were left off or could have been different, but you know, this is Joe’s iPod. He went through a lot of trouble to cook up 275 or so songs for us. I for one say thanks. There were a lot that I’d overlooked so there you go. I will now make like Voltron and assemble my own ultimate robot, only it will be made up of happy songs.
And They Might Be Giants will form – the Head!
Lots of great songs on there. did anyone ever collect the holiday/christmas song thread into a list?
Africa by Toto – I have no idea why, but I still like Toto’s music. It’s a great mystery to me.
No soul coughing or Mike Doughty? Some quirky/entertaining songs there, if you haven’t listend much. The line “too much bacon for the pan” always gets my family laughing.
When I’m not at work, I’ll have to go through this list…..thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I don’t own all of these….but maybe I’ll own more soon.
As I read through the list, I couldn’t help but smile. I just kept getting happier as I was reading through it. I saw Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio” but I didn’t see anything by Simon & Garfunkel. Did I miss it? Does Joe not find the 59th Street Bridge song happy? Or Cecilia? Hmph.
I noticed someone mentioned Alex Chilton’s death. And a lot of his music makes me happy as well. I hereby nominate the Box Tops version of The Letter – I smile just thinking of him as a 16 year old, singing that song.
Joe,
I don’t know if this qualifies but it makes me stupid happy when I see it. Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain – Smells Like Teen Spirit, here’s the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLQ2eh5LfZY
I also missed the Alex Chilton news yesterday. What a bummer.
September Gurls is a great, catchy tune, and while the music for the Ballad of El Goodo and Thirteen may seem a bit somber, they’re great, hopeful songs.
R.I.P. Alex
Feeling Good… Nina Simone
The Streak… Ray Stevens
The theme from Sesame Street.
How does that NOT make you happy?
I’ve created this as a playlist on Grooveshark (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Happy+list/26490207).
A few notes:
For Angela (theme from taxi) – I had to go with the Bob James version, I couldn’t find Avenue 4am (maybe they’re the same thing). Was not sure which version to add with ‘Life in a Northern Town’, I added original by Dream Academy. There were a couple of other small spelling errors, I tried to add the correct song by the named artist. If the song was available, but not by the named artist, I did not add it.
I didn’t do any checks to see if the actual song played matched up to the actual song named, let me know if they didn’t.
These I could not find on grooveshark:
american saturday night, brad paisley
At the Edge, Jonathan Elias
excuse me, amy arena
Gathering Crowds, John Scott (This Week In Baseball song)
Hawaii Five-O, Countdown
Here Comes The Sun, The Beatles
In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel
Jackie Wilson Said, Van Morrison
Jesse’s Girl, Matt the Electrician Version
The Metro, Berlin
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Tony Bennett
One Thing Was Missing (That’s You), Janet Jackson
Valentine, Nils Lofgren
You Are My Sunshine, Sara Gazarek
How can you omit I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. Easily their greatest effort.
I totally understand the concept that a song can make you happy even if it’s lyrics aren’t exactly chipper. I mean, London Calling is about the apocalypse, innit? But I can’t resist the charge I get when I hear the opening chords.
People need to stop trying to add songs to the list at this point and do what Joe asked, which is suggest songs he might comment on. Some of my favorites from Joe’s list:
Clash, London Calling
Van Morrison, Jackie Wilson Said
Kinks, Come Dancing
XTC, Mayor of Simpleton
Scritti Politti, Perfect Way
Church, Under the Milky Way
Beach Boys, Wouldn’t It Be Nice
I think this would make the song a lot different…
(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Boot, KC & The Sunshine Band
Great list – many similarities to what I’d have. I’d add some others, with a high degree of “cheesy factor.”
If you Steal my Sunshine – Len, or is it Lem?
Home – Marc Broussard
Cantaloop – Us3
Deeper Shade of Soul – Urban Dance Squad
One More Summer – The Rainmakers (a great KC band)
Long White Cadillac – Dwight Yokum
Minnie the Moocher – Cab Calloway and the Blues Brothers
Crazy Game of Poker – OAR
Southern Cross – CSN
An American Dream – Linda Ronstadt and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Never Been To Spain – Three Dog Night
You Don’t Have to Call Me Darlin’ (You Never Even Call Me By My Name) – David Allen Coe
@Redsauce — Brilliant!
Loved YOUR happy songs list. Couldn’t believe some readers took exception to YOUR list. p.s. I think the Nightengale sang in Barkley Square not Berkeley Square. Both Tony Bennet and Mel Torme have great versions.
Bad Day = WORST. SONG. EVER.
another one i might add:
ice cube – it was a good day
fun list!
Before I read the comments, this quotation from “The Sultans of Swing” jumped to mind as encapsulating what a bunch of the boys in the corner would have to say about your list.
“They don’t give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain’t what they call rock and roll”
The number of commenters criticizing Joe for including songs that are not “objectively” happy is sort of astonishing. I doubt anyone here doesn’t understand the concept that different songs stir up different emotions in people based on context and the different associations we have with songs. And yet it seems many commenters are pretending not to get that. “How can Song X make you happy, Joe? Have you listened to the lyrics?” or… “How can a song you don’t like make you happy?” You all know the answers to those questions even without Joe specifically explaining it…a song makes his daughters happy, or his wife, or brings up a pleasant memory, or maybe a song is so bad that when joe hears it he remembers a conversation he had with a friend where they were both cracking up laughing at how bad it was and now everytime he hears the bad song it makes him happy to recall that conversation. There’s many ways songs might stir up emotions which are opposite to those which would seem to objectively follow from the music and lyrics. I think everyone who loves music understand that.
The level of commentary is usually much higher around here.
I couldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t at least give a pitch for the Beastie Boys. Almost anything from Check Your Head or Hello Nasty would work, but I might have to go with “Paul Revere.” Old school.
Also Traveling Wilburys
and Blues Traveler
and Spin Doctors
Just thinking of these make me happy.
How about duets for artists already covered?
If so, the “Say, say, say” by McCartney and Jackson.
@33 – close, but I prefer Boston’s Don’t Look Back
Sing, Sing a Song (Carpenters)
How Does She Know, from the movie Enchanted (I guess a lot of songs from musicals are happy. And yes, I have kids.)
On Joe’s list, some of my favorites are Africa, Kids in America, More than a Feeling, and You Might Think
Great list, BTW.
Screw Feist…
Man, 100 Years always depressed me for some reason.
All Star by Smash Mouth has always struck me as especially cheerful, especially as featured in the first Shrek movie. Extra credit for the title being a baseball reference.
Whenever I See Your Smiling Face by James Taylor always strikes me as quite happy (although rather dated now).
Centerfold by J. Geils Band sounds incredibly happy despite the lyrics. Huge disconnect there.
@100 Redsauce: Can’t believe you took the time to make the playlist, but it’s awesome.
Also, agree with @75 and @90: it’s Joe’s list.
@ Redsauce – wonderful! Thanks. If you can’t find “Hawaii Five-O,” by Countdown, try searching under The Ventures. It will almost certainly be there.
RIP Alex Chilton
If you have never heard Big Star, take one hour of your life and listen to #1 Record
There is one that is just too perfect…”Mr. Brightside” by The Killers
Certainly everyone is entitled to their OWN personal list, but it strikes me that 280 is simply way too many. Can you have 280 All-Stars? 280 Foods? 280 Favorite colors?
Nevertheless, there’s quite a few in there I need to check out.
A few tidbits:
One Fine Day – George Harrison lost a court case for plagiarizing this song for his “My Sweet Lord”. He paid damages.
Save the Last Dance for me – should be credited to The Drifters (Ben E. King was the lead singer)
The Twist – The only Top 40 hit to make #1 on Billboard chart and then re-enter one year later and make it all the way back up to #1 upon re-release of the same recording!
1960 and 1961. Also Ernest Evans chose the stage name Chubby Checker as a nod to Fats Domino.
Video Killed the Radio Star – was the very first video ever played on MTV.
His Latest Flame was the flip side of a two-sided hit record on which “Little Sister” was the song that got more airplay – hence it’s not as weel knkown. Still damn good.
OK, time to take my meds now.
I love Rudie Can’t Fail, by the Clash.
Eurythimcs: “Right By Your Side”
It’s a good list, but — for ME, anyway — in many cases I think it suffers from “only song I know by these guys” syndrome.
For example, there are several Gary Numan songs which I’m almost 100% sure would make Joe happier than “Cars”. There’s at least four songs on Berlin’s second album that will eject me from my seat in seconds, as opposed to “The Metro” (or anything else on Pleasure Victim). I could say the same thing for dozens of artists here.
That’s not to say the choices aren’t defensible, of course. Just another sign of the “one-hit wonder who actually had more substantial work” syndrome.
No Magnetic Fields? I know you have Rufus Wainwright, but anything from volume 1 of 69 Love Songs could replace the Black Eyed Peas, Train, U2. U2 had some classic albums, but those don’t really have happy songs on them.
Updated the Grooveshark playlist based on the songs I could tell (at a quick glance) were added.
http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/Poz+s+happy+music+list/26490207
@nightfly — Are the Ventures the same thing as the Countdown (same band, different name) for Hawaii 5-0?
Rhapsody in Blue is not a song. It has no vocal part.
Sinnerman -Nina Simone
Love the list … three nominations for any remaining spots …
Hootenanny – The Replacements
Poor Poor Pitiful Me – Warren Zevon
Uprising – Muse
Can’t help myself…
Michael Nyman – The Promise
The Hold Steady – How a Resurrection Really Feels or Constructive Summer or Stay Positive
c’mon Joe, you gotta love Craig Finn’s lyrics
I’m totally going to steal your iPod if I ever meet you …
Zan the Man–
Harrison was sued for plagiarizing He’s So Fine, not One Fine Day. He was found guilty and assessed damages, but it became very complicated because of Allan Klein’s involvement, and as I recall Harrison claimed that he never did have to pay any money.
@Redsauce – I don’t think they’re the same band. The versions of 5-0 may sound similar, however.
Hey Joe,
I STRONGLY recommend any song by the Ditty Bops, from their self-titled album. They have a really unique blend of styles, very playful. I know there are some free clips online, check them out!
Some specific songs from the album:
Walk or Ride, Wishful Thinking, or Sister Kate.
Good list…some of my all-time favorite songs are on there…
The Ballroom Blitz, Sweet
Gimme Three Steps, Lynyrd Skynyrd
London Calling, The Clash
Surrender, Cheap Trick
Hey Joe,
I was pleasantly surprised to see a Tori Amos song on your list… she does some great covers and I always enjoyed her version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. That’s actually how I learned what the words were.

Lawrence from Plattekill:
Thanks for correcting me – of course you are right. As soon as I saw “The Chiffons”,
my addled brain zoomed into overdrive. Often wrong, but never in doubt. Oh well.
Allen Klein originally was on the Harrison legal/P.R. team but several years later he switched sides and purchased Bright Tunes Music Corp (the plaintiff) for about $500,000. Harrison eventually purchased Bright Tunes from Klein, so technically it wasn’t damages, but I doubt Harrison wanted to buy a struggling/defunct publisher.
To expand a bit on my criticism of Joe for including 280 songs: At what point does a list become so bulky and unwieldy that it becomes essentially useless? 500? 1,000? Even at 280, if you want to listen to all the songs (say 3 minutes apiece) you’re looking at about 10 hours of non-stop listening. At what point do you throw up your hands and say “Enough!”?
Music soothes the savage beast, but not moi.
here’s a challenge to Joe: OK, J.P., you’re a writer. Who are your favorite 280 writers?
Take your time.
Regards,
Zan the Man
I love that “Brian Wilson” is the Barenaked Ladies song that makes the list. The version from Rock Spectacle is one of my favorite things they’ve ever done.
To continue, my point about the Harrison case is that it may have been a way for a public (in spades) figure to pay the money and still retain the ability to truthfully say that he paid no “damages”. If I sue Sean Penn for punching me in a bar, and his lawyers tell me, Tell you what, let’s settle – he’ll pay you $500,000 to purchase your ’99 Buick. I take it! Thanks, Sean.
“We’ll Become Silhouettes” is by the Postal Service. Did the Shins cover it?
Also, it seems REAL weird that Tom Petty isn’t on here with either “American Girl” or their cover of “Something in the Air.” Cheap Trick’s “Southern Girls” seems obvious too.
In the world of mild obscurity, Camper Van Beethoven should be on with “She Divines Water,” Brian Eno’s “The True Wheel” always makes me feel good inside, “Blue” by the Jayhawks is so beautiful it makes me feel totally un-blue, and “I’m Always In Love” by Wilco demands inclusion.
I can see how one could waste a heck of a lot of time doing this.
Joe, will you be reading post #143?
What’s cool about Joe’s posts, and this is is no different, is it makes you think about something and then apply it to yourself. At least thats what I do. It doesn’t matter that I may not recognize some of the songs, or even agree with any of them, but that’s not the point, as Joe says….they had an impression on him in some way. It was fun going through the list, agreeing with some songs, disagreeing with others….remembering something that was happening in my life when I maybe first heard the song, or just listening to it…cool post Joe!

Joe, you made my wife very happy by including John Hiatt & Marc Cohn songs.
My list would certainly include “Mexican Radio” by Wall of Voodoo (I think). And my favorite Bob Dylan song that ALWAYS makes me smile every single time I hear it is “If Dogs Run Free”.
Listening to a pile of 45s and realized I mentioned nothing by Sam Cooke. It’s impossible to listen to his voice and not feel a sense of joy, whether he’s singing gospel, R&B, or straight pop.
Great list…I’d agree that many of the songs aren’t necessarily “happy” songs, but they’re certainly songs that I’m happy to hear because they bring out some strong emotions. Laugh, Cry, Think…the Jimmy V trifecta.
How could you leave off Right Field by Peter, Paul, and Mary?
Got to “Don’t think twice it’s alright,” and stopped reading. Any Happiest Song list that has that one on it is okay with me!
(Pretty sure this is the only such list, which makes me happier)
said it before, will say it again: I love it here
I wish I had thought of “Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games” by Of Montreal earlier. It’s the song that Outback Steakhouse bought the rights to and then adapted for its commercials.
This is a balanced list, Joe. I must admit that my expectations for this weren’t all that high because I assumed that you didn’t listen to a lot of contemporary music (other than what your daughters listen to). But from The Apples In Stereo, to Jamaraquai, to Outkast, Jay-Z, and The Decembrists, contemporary stuff is represented well here.

It’s a slightly cheesy song but definitely makes me smile when it comes on – “What I Like About You” by the Romantics. I just can’t help but start to sing along…
It’s great to see that Matt the Electrician has crossed your radar screen. He’s got some of the best music around. If you haven’t already you should check out all his stuff.
Great list Joe! My nominees not yet included:
1. La Bamba, Ritchie Valens
2. Centerfield, John C. Fogerty*
3. Happy Up Here, Röyksopp
* How has this not yet been included??
And my votes for those already nominated for inclusion in the poll. I limited myself to ten which was crazy hard:
1. 1234, Feist
2. ABC, Jackson 5
3. Africa, Toto
4. Beer, Reel Big Fish
5. Empire State of Mind, Jay-Z
6. Hey Ya, Outkast
7. I Gotta Feeling, Black Eyed Peas
8. Our House, Madness
9. Such Great Heights, The Postal Service
10. (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher, Jackie Wilson
My top 10 from Joe’s list:
Beautiful Day, U2
Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
Chicago, Sufjan Stevens
Dry The Rain, The Beta Band
Friday I’m In Love, The Cure
I Want You Back, Jackson 5 (from the comments section, not the list, but still…)
More Than A Feeling, Boston
Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits
Tiny Dancer, Elton John
Wouldn’t It Be Nice, The Beach Boys
I notice you had “London Calling” by the Clash on your list which is the most inspiring song I’ve ever heard. Here’s a version with a local flavor:
Cleveland Calling
Cleveland calling to faraway towns
The Cavs are for real, let’s get it on
Cleveland calling throughout Ohio
Come out of the cupboard, get ready to go
Cleveland calling, it’s time to address
Phony Laker mania has bitten the dust
Like a bolt of lightning, LeBron’s on his way
Blowout expected, do you really want to play?
Sure there’s been challenges but we have no fear
Cause we’re as deep as the Cuyahoga River
Cleveland calling, our king is home grown
Forget about it Kobe, it’s time to dethrone
Cleveland calling we will expose
Beyond Orlando’s magic there’s nothing but woes
Cleveland calling and there is no doubt
When the Celtics are playing, I saw you nodding out
Cleveland calling, you cannot deny
We are the best, come watch us fly
Like a bolt of lightning, LeBron’s on his way
Blowout expected, do you really want to play?
Sure there’s been injuries but we have no fear
Cause we’re as deep as the Cuyahoga River’
Now get this
Cleveland calling, yes I was at the Q too
An’ you know what they said? Well, all of it was true!
Cleveland calling we know we’ll be attacked
Come on, relax, Shaq’s got our back
Cleveland calling calling calling calling
In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry
Either September Grrls or 13, both by Big Star (can’t decide).
While we’re on the subject, I Will Dare by the Replacements would have been good adds to this list.
RIP Alex Chilton
Fun list to read through Joe – thanks as always for the provocative thoughts.
Live Forever by Oasis is a great one, too.
add an innocence mission song to the list…any song.

I’m so happy that you’re amenable to lobbying, Joe!!!
Sad to admit, but you adding it to your list kinda made my day!
Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest)…yeah, it’s commercial with a capital K, but whenever I hear the opening notes on the electric piano, no matter how I feel at the moment, a smile comes to my face without another thought.
Great list.
I really like “Feeling Good Again”, but would pick Robert Earl Keen, Jr.’s “The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends” way above it (probably my favorite), and I’d push for the live version from the .
I also suggest:
Country: “Dixieland Delight” by Alabama, “How Do You Like Me Now” by Toby Keith
Hip hop: “Forest Whitaker” by Brother Ali for hip-hop, “Sunny Hours” by Long Beach Dub All Stars
Jam band: “Aint Life Grand” by Widespread Panic
Punkish: “Here’s to the Night” by Eve 6 (sort of sad, but also really happy) and”Massive Nights” by The Hold Steady”
Latin pop: “Andar Conmigo” by Julieta Venegas
My top vote would probably be either Robert Earl Keen or Brother Ali.
P.S., I don’t really think of myself as a big music enthusiast, but thinking about this definitely put a big grin on my face – great excercise.
Good Things-Bodeans
Waterloo Sunset-Kinks anything by Grateful Dead Everthing is coming our way Santana Great list Joe.
“Shanty” by Jonathan Edwards
Gonna lay around the shanty, mama, and get a good buzz on…
“Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.
“Good Captain Clack” by Procol Harum
I’m guessing “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” won’t be making the list any time soon.
The Subways’ ‘Rock’N'Roll Queen’ does not make me happy as so much to give a sense of euphoria. I want to drop kick somebody and I am going to be happy when I do it. I know that sounds like trouble but at least it is not like Alex DeLarge with ‘Singin’ In The Rain’.
All-Time?
Probably New Radicals ‘You Only Get What You Give’

Björk, pick one:
Human Behavior
Venus as a Boy
Violently Happy
Big Time Sensuality
Alarm Call
All is Full of Love
Where is the Line?
Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)
Desired Constellation
Triumph of a Heart
Earth Intruders
Declare Independence
Also, the Sugarcubes- F**king in Rhythm and Sorrow
Much as I love Johnny Cash, I’d pick Big River or maybe That Dirty Ol’ Egg-Suckin’ Dog as his song that makes me happiest.
I’ve Been Everywhere belongs to Hank Snow. I can’t believe anyone else even tried to do it. I don’t think anyone else ever DID do I’m Movin’ On until Emmy Lou Harris did it (and very well, too).
I wouldn’t pick “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” as my Dylan song either. It’s a great song, but it’s not a happy song. My vote goes to “Mississippi.”
Oh, and “End Of The Line” by the Traveling Wilburys. That’s *gotta* be on there.
Awesome list Joe, I would have chosen many of the songs you did and I dug the Near Wild Heaven choice for R.E.M. and 1979 is a song that always puts a hop in my step.
The people complaining about *your* choices are really silly. It’s Joe’s list people, not the world’s definitive list.
I saw no Kings of Leon on the list, “Use Somebody” always makes me happy to listen to. Check it out.
Great idea. It could only be because it’s march, but I might add ‘whisky in the jar’ performed by an irish band in dublin with a guinness in your hand.
Good call on lots of the songs, but for PJ it should be “Given to Fly” and for Jackson Browne nothing makes me happier than “Doctor My Eyes!” For R.E.M., either “At My Most Beatufiul” or “Nightswimming” cannot be touched.
Also found “Go Your Own Way” to be an interesting Mac choice, given the circumstances behind it. I would go with “You Make Lovin’ Fun.”
Good things, that’s one that should be on the list for our family. It was the first song my kids loved that wasn’t a kiddy song. My oldest son couldn’t believe that they guys that sing that had broken up, “how could that be” he asked, if they wrote and sang this song?
Love the Cake and the Proclaimers on this list.
Some artists to add:
Dixie Chicks – “Sin Wagon”
Billy Joel – “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, “Prelude/Angry Young Man”, or “River of Dreams”
Muse – was suggested earlier in the comments, and “Uprising” is a fine choice…but I’m more inclined to recommend “Knights of Cydonia”
Blues Traveler – “Hook” for a popular song, but I’d really suggest “My Blessed Pain”
Rev. Horton Heat – “Psychobilly Freakout” or “Bad Reputation”
I feel bad for not requesting this, as I was thinking of my favorite happy songs, forgot my iPod, and subsequently forgot to post my favorite “happy” songs.
An absolute favorite of mine that I have not yet seen is “Warm Heart of Africa” by The Very Best. It has Ezra Koenig, the singer of Vampire Weekend on it, and the song reminds me of summer.
I’d also like to nominate “King’s Highway” from Tom Petty, “A-Punk” from Vampire Weekend, and “What I Got” from Sublime.
How about Area Codes by Ludacris? Who wouldn’t be happy about hos in different area codes… area…codes….
I want you to want me
As for Pearl Jam, I think I would have chosen a different song. Someone mentioned Black, but I cannot understand how Black is viewed by some fans as a happy song. I overheard one couple at a concert once saying it was their song. If you want a happier song, how about “faithful”. Dirty Frank may be happy because it is intended to be comical. Dig deep and maybe go for “gremmie out of control”. COWABUNGA
Joe. Being from Cleveland. How are Abba
and Ozzy Osbourne in the Rock Hall of Fame and Bon Jovi and Loggins and Messina not. I would add Your Mama Don’t Dance to your list. You can see the gopher-Bill Murray montage from Caddyshack on you-tube with Kenny Loggin’s I’m Alright.
Also Footloose has to be the best dance climax in a movie. I think that Yellow Submarine is the Beatle’s happiest song.
I love Joe’s list, but it just reinforces my long-held theory: whatever was on the radio in that crucial age 12-17 time period of your life will be color your tastes in music for the rest of time. I would guess that those years in Joe’s life were 1980 to 1987. Early MTV.
Joe, your list is valid because you included the theme from “Hawaii Five-O”. What a great piece of music. I agree with what someone said earlier, you really need something from the Traveling Wilburys. Great list tho!
Oh, I can’t tell you how happy I was to see Apples In Stereo represented!
No “Hip to be Square” or “I want a new Drug” by my boys Huey Lewis & The News?
Sunshine of Your Love, Cream
Fantastic List. You picked exact songs I would have from a ton of people. “I Can’t Stand Up” from Elvis Costello great choice. One quibble. No Tom Petty? “American Girl” always brings a smile to my face.
Saw a Robbie Robertson song on there, but nothing by The Band. The proper song would be “Up on Cripple Creek”.
A-Ha The Sun Always Shines on TV, is a great sad but happy tune.
“Love Like Woe” The Ready Set. It is the happiest song I have EVER heard.
[...] Joe Posnanski ?????: add an innocence mission song to the list…any song. 164: Here Comes The Sun Lyrics | VsCon said at 5:00 am on March 20th, 2010: [...] Kind Of Soul, Some Kind Of Mixture With Lou Reed. Complete Full Text, Lyrics, Words And Text By BHere … [...]
Joe,
What a wonderful discussion you started. Since it is your list, whatever song makes you happy is fine.
I’m big on variety so would have loved to have seen some Broadway (some of the happiest songs we have–even current musicals). The first one that comes to mind is My Fair Lady’s I Could Have Danced All Night recently done by Glee.
Didn’t see Bob Marley, but might have missed the one for him.
Back at One by Dave Willis makes me feel good.
I love free Pandora Internet Radio because I can create my own radio stations. I started with genres, but that didn’t cut it because for me music is all about how it makes me feel, so among my stations are:
My Main Radio, which is a variety from Opera, to Enya, to Rock, to Reggae, to B’way–I put most songs through this station and move it to another station if it better fits.
Joy Radio
Happy Radio
Feel Good Radio
For Exercise Radio
For Kids Radio
Holiday
and some genre and specific artist stations
Anyway, thank for your ideas and inspiring such great input.

Come on- you said that you think “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is sad because of its lyrics, yet you put on “We Will Become Silhouettes” by the shins which has morbid lyrics for example “then we’ll explode, and it won’t be a pretty sight”
PS: and musically even the original version by The Postal Service is happier than the Shins cover
