As I was reading the book, I kept thinking back to the Pete Rose I remember from my childhood. That was the guy who said he’d walk through hell to play baseball and acted as if he believed it. But Rose was always a guy who knew how to play the media. My question in looking back was whether that enthusiasm was genuine or as fake as Steve Garvey’s false front. The book certainly doesn’t answer that question, but suggests that passion was and remains real, making his downfall all the more a tragedy.
