Schedules and Such

Forgot to put up today’s radio spots … did about 548 of them. But one that’s worth mentioning: I did a Baseball Prospectus Podcast with good man Will Carroll. You can get that for free at iTunes.

Here is tomorrow’s schedule, all times Central:

7:30 a.m. — WEBN in Cincinnati.

8 a.m. — KTBS in Shreveport.

8:20 a.m. — KFKF in Kansas City.

8:40 a.m. — WLW in CIncinnati.

9:30 a.m. — KBUL in Billings.

10:15 a.m. — WSBC in Chicago.

12 p.m. — USA Radio Network.

1:35 p.m. — 1010 XL in Jacksonville

2:10 p.m. — KXNO in Des Moines

2:35 p.m. — ESPN radio in Waco

3:15 p.m. — WVBR in Ithaca

3:45 p.m. — 950 XL in Indianapolis

4:05 p.m. — WHTK in Rochester

Whew. Tired just typing those out. And for those of you in or near Cincinnati, as I understand it I will be doing a little book talk and signing at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame starting at 5:30 p.m. — just before the Reds-Marlins game. I certainly hope to see my old friend Hal McCoy, who was honored by the Reds this week and was a great source for The Machine.*

*It appears that in addition to my appearance, they will also be having the Hall of Fame Cornhole Challenge. AND a White Glove Station where people can hold a piece of Cincinnati Reds history. I’m not sure what that piece of history will be if you have to wear white gloves … but I cannot wait to find out!

Then, on Sunday at 1 p.m., I will be at one of my favorite bookstores in the world — Joseph Beth in Cincinnati (Norwood, specifically) — to talk about the book and sign some more. I used to go with my dear friend Chuck Culpepper to Joseph Beth, and we would write columns there and read newspapers from around the country, you know, back before we knew there was an Internet. It will be a lot of fun to go back.

Assuming I survive two more days of radio.

Tomorrow — between interviews — I’ll try to post a little more about Royals cleanup hitters, my thoughts on the HBO Real Sports story that had me as a member, and more!*

*Did I really put up a post that did not link The Machine? Of course not.

Nice post, Joe. Why is “The Machine” out at local bookstores?

I’d probably want a white glove if I had to be involved in the Cornhole Challenge.

In high school basketball we ran the “cornhole and roll” play quite often with great success. It might only work well in the Midwest – of course this was 40+ years ago also. (No white gloves needed – just big farmboys!)

    “Hall of Fame Cornhole Challenge”

    Uhhhhh…

Anyone want to explain this one?

  6. 6: Leon said at 10:19 pm on September 16th, 2009:

Appearances at the Reds Hall of Fame and Joseph Beth, and two radio interviews in Cincy, but no appearance on WKRP….I lost a little respect for you tonight Posnanski…..

  7. 7: Ted said at 10:20 pm on September 16th, 2009:

Damn Joe, that’s a lot of press.

So, I perused the list of radio spots hoping to learn that there really is a WKRP in Cincinnati.

Yeah, I’m that much of a dork.

    Joe, two things:

    1) do a good job for rochester…I need it

    2) I picked up The Machine and also The Soul of Baseball the other day and am very much enjoying The Machine (even though I am an Orioles fan and have never been to Cincinnati and generally don’t think much of Pete Rose), but the cover of it…well…if you’ve seen the third season of Arrested Development you probably understand why I can’t help but laugh and simulate an air horn in my head every time I look at the book.

So my question: do you know why I can’t help but laugh and simulate an air horn in my head every time I look at the book? Enquiring minds need to know!

P.S. Good job not getting picked on by the FJM squad today!

“P.S. Good job not getting picked on by the FJM squad today!”

    Heh. Should he have!?

For the sake of comedy – and to keep myself at least a little humble – I have to admit that upon reading this post my first thought was:

“How is he going to get to all those places in such a short span of time?”

    It’s been a long week.

Got my copy of the The Machine today! Do I risk not sleeping tonight by cracking it open right now? Hmmm… yes.

    Congrats, Joe!

KXNO in Des Moines, eh?? Hope you’ve brushed up on your Hawkeye Football knowledge, because that’s ALL they talk about on that station…

I lived in Cinci for about a year a few years back. For some reason Cornhole was huge over there. I’m not sure I ever went to a bar/ party/ football game without being forced to play a little cornhole. I never really got used to telling people back home that “I played cornhole last night”.

  16. 16: Motherscratcher said at 9:12 am on September 17th, 2009:

Joe – downloaded the Baseball Prospectus podcast this morning. Thank you for making my commute suck a little less.

@Jon #5 – I assure you that cornhole is totally innocent. However, I recommend you NOT google it at work.

  17. 17: Ant Bham said at 9:29 am on September 17th, 2009:

Just so you’re back at full strength for the thrilling conclusion to the “Beatles: How many geniuses?” poll. It’s a cliffhanger right now with “2″’s lead narrowing over “3,” and George Harrison backers are predicting victory.

  18. 18: Mikey said at 10:13 am on September 17th, 2009:

Off-topic: If you think Joe has been tough on the Royals, read Pittsburgh native and longtime NY Times columnist Murray Chass’s burial of the Pirates on his non-blog blog:

    http://www.murraychass.com/?p=980

One of many money quotes: “Simply put, the Pirates are an embarrassment to Pittsburgh and an embarrassment to Major League Baseball.”

As a Pittsburgh native and Pirates fan-in-exile myself I couldn’t agree more.

sports talk radio seems like an effective and effecient way to promote your book…

good luck – and have fun with it…

just got done reading SL Price’s book about Mike Coolbaugh…

the Coolbaugh story is interesting enough but Price gives the reader the added benefit of describing life as a minor leaguer…

  20. 20: Shelby said at 11:20 am on September 17th, 2009:

Am I not getting something here?

Why no spots on the local sports radio shows?

Are you afraid of getting in between Petro and Nick Wright?

off-topic: I’d like to throw my name into the (bizarre) up-cropping of support for Pavement’s impending reunion and “world tour” on this sports blog.

Really, is it a cash-grab or the real deal?

  21. 21: David Gizmo said at 12:27 pm on September 17th, 2009:

Just wanted to say how much I love The Machine. It really brings me back to my childhood, yet has also given me a new perspective on what that team really went through day-by-day. An outstanding book, and I plan to buy at least 2 or 3 more copies as gifts. Best of luck with the appearances and sales!

  22. 22: Mikey said at 2:04 pm on September 17th, 2009:

@ 20 – Seems like something of a cash grab, but so what? None of those guys really got rich from being in Pavement.

Pavement is one of my very favorite bands ever. If those guys want to travel around the world for a couple months and stuff some money in their pockets, more power to them.

  23. 23: Nate said at 2:45 pm on September 17th, 2009:

Pavement reunion??? The feeling is mutual
