I’m Not On Mexican Radio …

… but I’ll be on plenty of other radio this week. Yes, The Machine hits big bookstores and the indies and the e-Readers Tuesday. Hard to believe it’s already out since I’ve only been shamelessly plugging the book on this blog, for, what, nine months?
Funny thing about writing books these days … the writing is barely half the work. The other half comes when the book comes out and you find yourself (if you’re lucky) doing countless radio and television interviews promoting the book. You KNOW how good I am on radio, so this will be just great. The interviews start tomorrow and should last all week … all the way until the weekend when I go to CIncinnati for a couple of kickoff book events.
Here’s my Tuesday schedule … you might get a kick of out of it. The last thing on there is an interview I did with Frank Deford for a Real Sports piece about newspapers. I’m still hopeful they edited me out. I’d like to be the Real Sports version of Kevin Costner in The Big Chill. But I don’t know … I’ll be seeing it for the first time live.
Kansas City
8:50 a.m. — In Studio at Fox 4 television.
St. Louis
11:40 a.m. — KFNS radio
Illinois
Noon — Radio in Illinois, not sure of the city or call letters.
Memphis
1:15 p.m. — 730 AM Fox Sports
Bowling Green, Ky.
2 p.m. — on WBGN. Bowling Green scared the heck out of Missouri this week, wonder if we’ll talk about that.*
*This really was a joke. I’ve BEEN to Bowling Green, OH more than once and I’ve also been to Bowling Green, Ky. But several people have already complained … so that joke fell flat.
St. Louis
3:20 p.m. — 1380 AM.
Omaha
4:10 p.m. — KOZN radio
Cincinnati
5:10 p.m — WLW radio.
Milwaukee
6:20 p.m. — WSSP radio
National
8:15 p.m. — Fox Sports Radio
National (and not book related)
9 p.m. — HBO Real Sports story about sportswriting and newspapers.
Wrong Bowling Green.
Yup, I think you’d have to talk about Western Kentucky in that Bowling Green. They do have a new minor leage team down there, though. So there’s that.
Joe,
Not sure if you were kidding, but just to forewarn you before bringing it up on air – the Bowling Green that scared Mizzou is the Bowling Green in the MAC – in Bowling Green, OH (south of Toledo), not Bowling Green, KY.
Anywho, looking forward to getting the book. I’ll be in Cincy this weekend so I’m hoping I can make it to one of your signings.
Can you talk Greinke on HBO? Pretty please?
Figured you were just joshing us with the BG reference. Urban Meyer did a fine job there, even if the Cradle of Coaches is still further south in Ohio.
Come to Minneapolis for your book tour. You can say goodbye to the Metrodome, cheer on your favorite manager and promote your book.
I got it, Joe! I got “The Machine”! My fiancee just surprised me with a copy from Borders. Thanks for doing the work.
Two things:
1 – no love to the hometown Cleveland?
2 – what’s with the praise on the back of the book for “Soul of Baseball? That’s kind of weird.
Editor’s note:
1. Lots more to come; definitely hope to get some Cleveland time.
2. Yeah, I thought the praise for Soul was kind of weird too. Publisher’s decision … as was the long, long subtitle. They know a lot more about this stuff than I do, I expect (and hope).
I’m surprised you’re only scheduled for 1 thing in the Cincy area (so far). I’d think they’d really sell good there so the publisher or whoever would set up you for a few days there and milk it.
I guess this goes to show that people who know just a little geography seem to think that other folks know even less. For some of you to think that Sir Joe doesn’t know the difference between Bowling Green Univ in NW Ohio vs the city of Bowling Green, KY is a bit too telling. I thought Sir Joe had many BRs, maybe not tonight. (Joe was only born and raised in Cleveland area, worked in Cincy early in his career. Has traveled extensively in the Midwest covering sports. Yeah I think he probably knows the difference….)
Uh, Joe – it did fall a bit flat though. For a good geography joke how about this one?
Question: What is the difference between a coon ass and a horses’s ass?
Answer: The Sabine River (look it up, Rand McNally!)
Love the Wall of Voodoo reference.
I might have to buy the book now even though I don’t give a damn about the reds.
I got it! Yay! Although I do regret to say that while I’ve broke it open and read a little, I’m going to finish my copy of “The Hustler’s Handbook” by Bill Veeck that I got for my birthday first. (Two of his innovations that he called for baseball to adopt immediately? Ads on the tarps and cool pictures or ads or odd facts on tickets. Yes, it was written in 1965.)
What’s weird about the praise for Soul of Baseball?
Purchased the book at Borders in Dayton on Saturday afternoon. Started reading it Saturday night after the OSU loss. Finished it Monday afternoon.
Great book, Joe. Although I’ve read so much of your source material much of it was familiar to me. But the other stuff I’ve read on the BRM didn’t quite capture the personalities the way yours did. Only quibble is I would’ve liked a bit more stats, since I’m a nerd for that.
I especially loved the part about George Foster and his black bat. When I was a kid, I loved Foster…mimicked his swing, and had a black bat.
Will there be an audio version of “The Machine”?
If so, will you be the one reading it?
I hope your interviews will give you an opportunity to plug reinstating Pete Rose and getting him into the HOF. Bud Selig needs to get off his ass and do something. Selig has done more to tarnish the game than Rose.
Just a guess, but if most of your books are being sold online there’s no point in blurbing the book itself on the back cover. By the time the reader is holding the book and reading the praise they’ve already bought it. Might as well try to sell them something else.
Could be wrong but I think that Fox Sports Radio interview will then be archived on the Fox Sports web site, so if you don’t hear it live hopefully you’ll be able to check it out later at your convenience.
Joe, I’ve been looking forward to today for some time. I have no connection to Cincinnati in any way, shape or form…and I just ordered my book from Amazon. Can’t wait.
Looking forward to Real Sports tonight.
Not really topical, except of course that it’s your blog, and thus seems to be the clearinghouse of Royals sadness… baseball reference’s “stat of the day” about the worst cleanup hitting in baseball this year.
The chart runs from #2 to #31 – apparently the table considered the column headers “#1″ – but it’s not hard to guess where KC falls. What’s surprising is exactly how far that fall is. The Royals’ fourth hitters have slugged .301 this year. That’s lower than the OBP of 28 of the other teams. Not only is nobody getting fired over this, the GM and coach are getting extended!
Free Zack Grienke.
Joe, nothing in NY, or on Satellite radio? Tell your publisher’s publicists to get going, for crying out loud. If your only trip here is to a reading in Brooklyn, that will be a drag.
I bought three copies. I wish you a ton of luck with this.
And, Davey Concepcion should get more consideration for the HOF. Maybe this book will help
According to Amazon, the 3 copies I ordered in April shipped yesterday!! Hoping to be at one of your Cincy stops this weekend with all 3 in hand. Cannot wait to dig in. Since my Reds and Bengals are out I’ve got a little free time.
Well I’m not familiar at all with Cincinnati radio but I’m going to assume WLW is the market leader and Joe is on at 5:10.
When it comes to sports talk radio, you can’t reach more listeners than that time slot.
how about the Michael Kay show on ESPN Radio here in NY? they seem to talk about baseball for the entire show, virtually every day, and it’s drive time. I’d leave work early if i knew you were on the air talking about The Machine, and the Royals.
I hope some book signings in KC are in the works (preferably with Rainy Day Books)!
Amazon tells me that my copy of the Machine will be here tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it. I read your email exchange w/ Rob Neyer this morning, and it just got me more excited about the book.
I’m a Red Sox fan, though – any chance the book ends after Game 6?
Joe – book tour. Details.
You don’t know where in Illinois your gig is? You gotta help me here a little…..
Hey Joe, thought you might like to know that things are looking good in Louisville.
First place I went looking (local store): sold out.
Second (Borders): sold out.
Third (B&N): 2 copies left (1 now).
Joe-
Long story short; I fished the Redbone Tournament with Curt Gowdy in November of 2002. We were shooting a spot for my show: Coastal Sportsman in the Florida Keys (I’m now retired). Curt didn’t know I was from Cincy, and trying to break the ice I asked him; “What was the greatest World Series ever?” Without missing a beat, he replied; “The 1975 Red Sox vs. Reds.”
We chatted a long time about the Series, The American Sportsman and Ted Williams (who had recently died). Curt was the real deal. I cherish the 8 hours of fishing that I spent with him that day (all on tape thankfully).
When I went back to Cincy this past summer for my high school reunion, I shared that story of the greatest World Series ever. My classmates agreed!
Thanks for writing the book, I can’t wait to read it.
Clark
I just downloaded my copy to the Kindle. Please post on a KC signing.
Any chance of seeing you on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart?
He loves baseball..
Joe’s segment from WEEI is up on their website: http://audio.weei.com/m/26399301/joe-posnanski.htm.
