Family and Friends

OK, so, many of you have wondered how in the heck my wife puts up with me considering that I am constantly writing — at the Star, on this blog, at Sports Illustrated, on my other blog, in a certain book that has a pathetically large Amazon number, etc.

Well, the truth is she only puts up with it because I will, on occasion, link to her site. And today, I have a special link … not only is there a giveaway, but there is also a wonderful interview with Sharon Lovejoy, who not only has “Love” and “Joy” in her name but is also author of the book “Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together With Children.” You can win a copy of the book by leaving a comment, but more, much more, you can help keep these blog posts coming by leaving comments, gardening stories, parenting thoughts, whatever. Because, let’s be honest … If Margo decides one day that it’s time ol’ Dad stopped writing about Brian Bannister and Snuggies and started helping out around the house a bit more, well, none of us would be happy. So, read and comment. You’ll like it too … it’s a fun interview.

Many of you have asked about good friend and motorsports writer Jim Pedley, who was recently laid off from the Star. Well, Jim and a few racing writers have started this excellent Web Site. I’ll give you more about it as time goes on, but for now if you have any interest in any kind of racing — open wheel, NASCAR, short track, whatever — this is your place.

can someone clue me in on what “circle me Bert” means?

Posnanski was on Sesame Street a couple of years ago, and that was one of his lines.

The skit involved Bert, Ernie, Poz, sidewalk chalk, and the letters A, B, C, and D. Hilarity ensued.

Love all your work Joe… but let’s be honest: you stopped writing about Banny a long time ago. You have moved on to bigger and better things to write about (someone called “Bruce” seems to wring a bell). We KC folk will always love you but this blog his certainly turned from a KC-centered view of the world to a world-centered view of the world.

    Just wrote #5 post above…

It came out much more pissy than I intended.

I love your work and look forward to all your posts. It’s true that you have gone from writing about KC-centered things to things that would interest a more generalized audience… but that’s OK. I guess when we want to know what you thought about Hillman’s lineup for yesterday’s game (Bloomy and Trips in the same linup– egads!!!) we need to surf on over to the KC Star page (or if you are over eighty years old I guess you could get a subscription) rather than look here. That’s not a bad thing.

Don’t look at me, I pre-ordered the thing just yesterday.

Justin Ranes the whippersnapper writes, “. . .or if you are over eighty years old I guess you could get a subscription.”

Justin, you are riling me up on two counts. (Three, counting your use of “bell wringing.” Only Superman could wring a bell.) As Jefferson understood, this country needs newspapers that crinkle when you fold them and that don’t require batteries.

The book has a large Amazon number because we’re frightened, confused, and angry that this 8/18/09 book sounds a lot like a 9/9/09 book we’d been hearing about.

I am pretty sure, given the nature of this blog, that “Circle Me Bert” is a reference to this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Blyleven#Circle_Me.2C_Bert

Especially given Joe’s fondness (and that of most readers/commenters here) for Bert Blyleven.

Though I must say, I do really like the Sesame Street story, true or not.

  11. 11: Damon Rutherford said at 11:32 am on April 16th, 2009:

David in NYC — the Blyleven circling on baseball telecasts is pure coincidence.

    Damon –

    No doubt, no doubt. ;-)
