For example, you wouldn't want to be the only west coast team with everyone else in your league on the east coast. If all the other teams in your geographical area got relegated, your travel issues would be incredibly unfair, compared to everyone else in the league. England is relatively small, so relegation works there. Every team is in the same time zone, for one thing. The US has three time zones and manny thousands of miles to deal with. Relegation wouldn’t work in the US, because of geography.
