With respect to the argument that Pujols plays in the weaker league, I took a look at his splits on Retrosheet. I haven't read the whole thread, so maybe someone has already posted this, but between 2001 and 2007 Pujols' rate stats were .332/.420/.620. In 100 interleague games he has hit .344/.423/.605 with 91 RBI. (I would note that about one-third of those games were against the Royals, whom Pujols clobbered for .394/.472/.701.) Anyway, he's awesome.

Joe, I purchased Soul of Baseball at a bookstore in Kelowna a couple of weeks ago. I greatly enjoy your blog and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Let's not forget the fact that his elbow needs surgery. Pujols keeps raking where a lot of other guys would be on the DL. An unhealthy Pujols may be the best position player in the game. I'd like to see his stats some year that he could be 100%

"he guy goes on tears, but he also disappears for weeks at a time (not like our man Jose, though)"

You are either a troll, or hideously insane. Please go to www.baseball-reference.com, type in Albert Pujols, and click on the Gamelogs links for whatever year you like. I dare you to find me a single two week period (smallest period possible that adheres to your ridiculous standard) where he disappeared in his entire career. Just one.

"He hits a lot of homers when the team is already rolling or when it is hopelessly behind"

You must be a New York media member who bleats nonsense without ever bothering to check.

Albert Pujols' slash stats when the margin in a game is more than 4 runs : .333\.409\.609

Pujols' slash stats when the margin is 1 run : .334\.430\.637

Pujols' stats with 2 Outs, RISP : .327\.509\.659

It sucks when you bleat about something that can easily be verified, huh?

"And, this year, his numbers just don’t look like anything special at all."

Albert Pujols 2008 : OPS+ 181. EqA : .362. WARP1 : 8.4.

Next time, look something up before you post drivel.

You THINK Pujols is underrated? How many MVPs has he won?

BBWAA = Idiots.

And yes, I can't believe that GMs wouldn't chose Pujols, although one thing I could imagine they're worried about is the fact that he does have some scary injuries (chronic plantar fasciitis and ofcourse that torn to shreds elbow.)

It is a "small market - midwest thing" when it comes to publicity. The same argument can be made for Stan Musial. I believe you have the most underrated retired player with the most underrated current player...what is the connection? Neither plays or played for an East or West coast team...and hopefully never will.

My favorite thing about Pujols is that whenever I see him run, the Tyrannosaurus Rex from "Jurassic Park" pops into my head. Somehow that running style makes perfect sense for him. But really...bend your knees, Albert!

That said, I agree with what others have said--he'll be the greatest RH hitter of all time when he retires. Shame that more people don't appreciate what a treat it is to watch him now. For me, he's definitely reached "if he's at the plate, drop whatever else you're doing to watch" status.
