Back to the origin of your word, the radio broadcast. Jeter got praise for ensuring that A-Rod and Abreu could move up one base. Isn't that good. Does everyone do that?
Did you listen to the radio Wed 8/26/09? A-Rod at 2nd, Matsui hitting a singel up the middel that the SS got to. A-Rod heading home, and very early you could see that he never would make it. Did A-Rod stop and turn back to 3rd, and ensure that Matsui could go to 2nd? No he didn't.
Maybe it is worth praise to have a clear head and do the right thing?

Joe,
Find someone else to pick at. He performs in the clutch. Guys who are outstanding on both sides of the ball and choke in the clutch are worthless. Guys on steroids suck. Rafeal Palmeiro won a gold glove while having more games at Dh than in the field. If youre picking at a guy like Jeter- get to the other degenerates first. And hes not terrible on defense. Gary Sheffield at 3b is terrible at defense. Jeter might not be great in the field but hes far from terrible. He's one of the best at coming in on a ball thats a roller and great in the ss-3b hole running away from 1st and throwing- you cant be better than your peers in one or two aspects and be the worst overall at the same time. In addition, most of the people in the world and your readers barely have enough brain power to run their circulatory system. When you pick at Jeter- someone who can set a great example for people- they will shy away and look to poor examples- because there are not a lot of stand up people and role models- and because they do not have the ability to objectively look at youre WHOLE argument.

I understand the hate the everyone feels, but hey "listen the Cap is the Cap for a reason". #2 is without a doubt in generation steroid the best player of them all. I mean Jeter or the Cap like we call him in the Bronx, is undoubtedly the only player that everyone knows was not on the roids during a time when almost everyone was, from hitters to pitchers to even bench players I mean the list is incredible. You can see the difference throughout the whole entire league, everyones numbers is down except for who, yea I'll wait the mother-f..king CAP. So for all the haters out there name me one other player that would have done anything close to those two defensive plays that replay on every postseason commercial since being done, and name me one other player with 2 outs and a man in scoring position on the biggest stage that you would want at the plate, you can't because the CAP is crunch time baby.

I've been a Yankees fan since the early 70's, so I've seen the likes of Munson, Chambliss, Nettles, and Mattingly, to name a few. They were leaders. I've never understood the Jeter/Leadership thing. As for defense, I chuckled when he won the Gold Gloves (that award is a farce anyway, isn't it? - can you say Rafael Palmeiro?). For many years, I've wished he would be sent to the outfield. Even first base would be OK - though they wouldn't get the power numbers - he can pick it to his right! Jeter is jeterated like nobody's business. And now Eli is getting jeteration on the football side! It's a New York thing.

wow. I’ve heard a lot of criticism about Jeter, but THIS one takes the cake. If you don’t like him, that’s respectable. If you’re not even into the yankees, that’s respectable too. But writing something like THIS is pure bullcrap. I don’t know what’s more ridiculous, articles like these on Jeter or the boos A-rod gets if he's having a bad gameday. The guy is only human. With all the stuff that Derek has done in his career, I think it’s obvious that he’ll be in the hall of fame. Here’s some advice:DON’T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME.

there is some great stuff in here..... great comments ... jeter is a good player but the media ( mostly new york ) has turned him into the greatest clutch player who ever lived... now if someone will only take a little closer look at the myth of how jeter is such a great clutch hitter.... when does this clutchness supposedly occur? not in the post season where his rbi ratio, obp, slug pct, ops, hitting with runners in scoring position and late and close stats goes down... way down with regard to late and close and runners in scoring position.....not even close....those stats don't lie.... only his average remains roughly the same... what about during the regular year? well hitting late and close is at .286 for his career and hitting with runners in scoring position is below his career average.... so how does he raise his game in those situations? what about his career batting average in the ninth innings? well about .235 for his career... how is he so great with the bat when he averages 75 rbi a year on an american league team that usually scores the most runs...by accident you would have to drive in that many with that lineup... incidentally check out his average once he gets 2 strikes on him.... not saying he is a bad hitter obviously he can hit for average.... but he does not deserve the accolades he gets for his hitting when he in fact struggles in the clutch.... especially in the post season... don't take my word for it... check it out...

Kevin,

Even before he was deemed captain - in the glory days, players will tell you that Jeter was a great leader. From the beginning.. him, Cone, O'Neil... but Jeter was the one. Very few players do what he does.. like hitting with RISP, bunting, base running, hitting with RISP and 2 outs.. he's the most underrated player in ALL of baseball, if you ask me.

Jeter is hardly a bad defensive shortstop - his error's have certainly increased over the years, but the intangibles are mind-boggling. His range to his right is incredible, and his arm is HARDLY subpar. DJ has one of the best arms for a shortstop in MLB history. That is widely noted - his accuracy is questionable at times, but his arm his subpar? That's a huge fallacy.. before every game Jeter plays long toss on the first base side of the field.. watch his 'subpar' arm for yourself, if you don't believe me. He is an incredible clutch and aware offensive force... he is a player with great numbers who TRANSCENDS all numbers.
