Banny Log: Reader’s Digest Version

2nd inning:

Manny Ramirez: Soft infield single up the middle.*
Mike Lowell: Soft singled in the hole between short and third.*
Kevin Youkilis: Hard single between short and third.
J.D. Drew: Grand slam.

*Both of these might have been fielded by shortstop Tony Pena. Unfortunately, shortstop Tony Pena is hitting .162 and was replaced in the lineup by Alberto Callaspo, who can hit better but has the range of the Pesky Pole. Let’s be honest, it ain’t easy putting together the Kansas City Royals lineup every day.

Fun Fenway fact: Did you know that there is not a Citgo station within 12 miles of the famous Citgo Sign behind the Green Monster?

Fun Fenway fact II: J.D. Drew’s home run did not hit the Citgo sign.

Joe, enjoying the beer at Fenway? Two beers at Fenway cost just a tiny bit more than one year of tuition at Boston University.

  4. 4: Bellylard said at 12:40 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Do they actually put alcohol in the beer at Fenway now? Seems to me a lot of those louts had to show up drunk to maintain their level of discourse chugging that lite beer.

You can already watch the grand slam on MLB Gameday.

    Bannister’s face says it all.

Two beers may cost slightly more than a year’s tuition at BU, but try parking for a game at Fenway. Only the ultra-rich need apply.

Meanwhile, Matsuzaka’s been terrible. So far, 6 walks in 4+. Despite what the scoreboard says, Banny’s really outpitched him so far. As a Red Sox fan, I find this unbelievably frustrating. Why are you walking guys with a four-run (now three, thanks to the BB) lead?

I have been looking at the rosters of the Royals AA and AAA farm teams, and we’re basically devoid of any position play talent. There’s a couple of 1b/DH types, but that’s it.

I’m thinking we draft the Florida State catcher, Buster Posey, with our third pick this year.

who parks at Fenway? Honestly? Park on the outskirts, take the T in!

Joe, I worship the ground you walk on, don’t get me wrong, but Banny’s been roughed up quite a bit, today included. Has the magic worn off?

  14. 14: Mike said at 2:01 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Because I’m just bored enough at work to post this and used to live across the street, there’a a Citgo at the intersection of Huntington and the Riverway, about 2 miles from Fenway. Such clearly erroneous information would make Buzz very upset.

Can I pretend this game never happened? Even after Guillen’s homer just now I’m still in a “Shit, I can’t believe this is happening” mood. Yuck.

  17. 17: Jennifer said at 2:04 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Banny is Banny, limited talents with good brain. It can only takes you so far even you are super smart. Joe you were giving him way too much credit. A pitcher who solely rely on errorless defense is not going to always have rosy days like he had earlier in the season. I still think he is a #3 at best with his average stuff.

  18. 18: Marcel said at 2:09 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

There’s plenty of reasonably priced parking as long as you don’t mind a bit of walking. Which is good, because after having to pay 4 times the face value for tickets, I certainly can’t afford 40 bucks for parking. Stupid legal scalping…

  19. 19: Mikey said at 2:10 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Man, this week’s posts have got me dying to get up to Fenway as soon as the weather gets really warm. If it ever does.

  20. 20: Mike said at 2:51 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Joe – please text Banny and tell him to forget the “pitching to contact”/”efficiency” nonsense, and strike out as many people as he possibly can. I don’t care how smart anyone thinks he is… if he could be striking out more people, even at a cost of going less deep into ballgames, he’s stupid not to. It is by far in the best interest of his team (and his future bank account balance) to do so.

Probably so no one finds out their so-called “premium” tops out at 92 octane…

  23. 23: McKingford said at 6:45 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

I was watching this game, specifically because Bannister was pitching, and it’s an afternoon game.

Ramirez hits a soft single to left in the 2nd, then I get a call from my sister, who’s visiting Boston for a friend’s wedding. She’s calling from her cell – she’s sitting behind home plate at Fenway. Now I’m bitter, because I’ve never been to Fenway. So I tell her (she’s not much of a baseball fan), as a juicy insider tidbit, that KC should be a lock for this game: Bannister is unbeatable in afternoon games.

I hang up, and sit down just in time to watch Drew put one over the Green Monster for a grand slam.

Now I’m never going to hear the end of it from my sister.

  24. 24: Dan said at 6:56 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Well count me as disappointed that the one time Bannister pitches at Fenway, we get a world-record setting shortest Joe Blog post of all-time.

I may just have to rethink that buying the book pledge. ;)

Oddibe Kerfeld – Hugo Chavez has actually been legitimately elected to office twice. And actually gave discounted gas to the poor people of the united states so they could heat their homes two winters ago.

    What’s your take?

  28. 28: maaaty said at 10:22 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Parking, schmarking. Best decision I ever made was to leave Johnson County for Boston. 15 years now without a stinking car. And by my calculation, State Farm has collected about $28,000 less money from me. Yeah, I was a bad driver — worked out well for everyone.

Now I just hope the Sox & Royals never have to play against each other in a meaningful late-season game. I have two masters!

  29. 29: ajnrules said at 11:21 pm on May 22nd, 2008:

Bah…Royals got the tying run at the plate…a wasted opportunity if you ask me.

I really don’t want Matsuzaka leading the league in wins this year. (Go Wang!)

  30. 30: Jon Morse said at 12:41 am on May 23rd, 2008:

    Oh, Joe. No, no.

Over in the game thread at RR, I asked the snarky question “Over/under on first ‘Pena would have gotten to both of those balls’ comment?”

I never dreamed that it’d come from you, of all people.

Pena probably would have *gotten* to both balls. There’s no way in hell he’d have thrown either of them out, however.

  31. 31: Guinevere said at 4:41 am on May 23rd, 2008:

Thanks for the memories, KC! Joe, did you ever get to the North End and find any “real” eye-talian food?

  32. 32: Eric said at 7:07 am on May 23rd, 2008:

I have been going to Fenway for close to 30 years. I haev never paid for parking. Its in a freakin’ neighborhood. Surrounded by other neighborhoods. Free parking galore, if you’re willing to walk 15-20 minutes, which is probably less time that it would take to get the car out of one of those jam-packed parking lots anyway.

This Boston fan was happy to see the Royals in town. First for the obvious reason–the result was not unexpected. But also, I was looking forward to reading Posnanski on the Sox. A refreshing change from the bitter, gravy-stained hacks that are left at the Globe and Herald, most of whom combine Joe Morgan’s “insight” with Buzz Bissinger’s “open-mindedness.” For that reason alone, I hope the Royals do well enough for some October baseball.

  33. 33: Josh in DC said at 8:09 am on May 23rd, 2008:

  34. 34: Eric in Mass said at 11:27 am on May 23rd, 2008:

Your comment on the Citgo sign was good. If you take tour of the park there was a hitter who focused on the sign. The way he read the Citgo sign was

C – It – Go (See it go)

Hope you enjoyed your stay in this neck of the woods regardless of the games’ outcomes. Oh, and I just bought “The Soul of Baseball” at Barnes and Noble. Paid full retail, gladly at that.
